About This Item
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1900. Good-. Overall good minus condition, but still noteworthy, since it has retained the original binding Most other copies listed recently have been rebound
The antique small format volume has color illustrations throughout The story takes the form of a traditional fairy tale about a little girl, an evil old woman, a crocodile, and a mongoose
This book is a companion to Helen Bannerman's other most well known work,"Little Black Sambo" While today we recognize some uncomfortable racial overtones in these stories, Wikipedia notes of "Little Black Sambo": "Critics of the time observed that Bannerman presents one of the first black heroes in children's literature and regarded the book as positively portraying black characters in both the text and pictures, especially in comparison to the more negative books of that era that depicted blacks as simple and uncivilised" The same could be said about "Little Black Mingo," which portrays the heroine as a thoughtful and brave protagonist
This copy has a charming gift inscription in pencil on the inside front cover " William Rogers from Santa Claus - Xmas 1907
