About This Item
Synopsis
A true classic with a timeless message, The Story of Ferdinand has enchanted readers since it was first published in 1936. All the other bulls would run and jump and butt their heads together. But Ferdinand would rather sit and smell the flowers. So what will happen when our pacifist hero is picked for the bullfights in Madrid? The first print run by Viking Press sold 14,000 copies at $1 each. The following year sales increased to 68,000, and by 1938 it was selling 3,000 copies a week - outselling Gone with the Wind (which had won the Pulitzer in 1937). The story is often seen as a political symbol, and was banned in many countries including Spain. Hitler ordered it to be burned in Germany, and after the Germans were defeated in WWII 30,000 copies were printed and handed out to German children as symbols of peace. -
