Blue Cloth covered hardcover boards with decorative gilt plate with blue lettering to front boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Front hinge repaired, former owner's name and date of FFE (June, 1884) with repaired tear to to fore edge. Closed tears to pages 13-through 16. Scuffing and wear to front and back boards, fraying to head and tail of spine.
This was Howe's self-published novel of small tonw life in midwestern America. At a time when local fiction was mainly ppicturesque, Howe's insight with social analysis, and trenchant realism won the vigorous support of both Mark Twain and William Dean Howells.
