About This Item

New York: Random House, 1978. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Fine in nearly Fine dust jacket. Housed in a unclipped first issue dust jacket with the price $6.95 intact and photograph of the author on rear panel, minor toning to yellow on jacket spine. Bound in red paper board with yellow cloth backstrip, gilt embossed title on front and spine. Signed "Joy! Maya Angelou" on first flyleaf. Interior bright and clean, appearing virtually unread.

First edition of Angelou's third book of poetry, signed by the author, which includes her famous poems "Still I Rise" and "Phenomenal Woman." Her 32 poems divided into three sections explore hope and resilience through the lens of gender and race. A compelling collection by the prolific award-winning author and activist, who once described her work thus: "I speak to the Black experience, but I am always talking about the human condition-about what we can endure, dream, fail at and still survive." Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
