Volumes: Complete 7-volume set from the library of Englishman, William Greenly (see below). Stapled binding. Thin gilt bordering on both boards, ribbed spine with gilt lettering, and gilt-bordered compartments (photo). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in Volume One (photo). Subscriber's list in Volumes 3 & 5.
Volumes 1 & 2 have the Greenley pasted bookplate and William's dated signature (photo). Volumes 3,4, & 6 have a Greenley bookplate and undated signature. Volumes 5 & 7 have bookplates only.
All volumes have extensive tanning on the endpaper margins (photo). Heavy toning on page edges of all volumes.
Volume 7, The top and bottom spine edges are missing, and the title is partially defaced (photo). The cracked spine has been mended. Volume 6 has weakened boards but is still attached to the spine.
NOTE: Volume One is two volumes by separate authors. As noted by Sterne in the Preface, the first volume contains Mr.Yorick's re-published 7 sermons, followed by the second volume of Sterne's 8 sermons. All sermons in Volume One received continued enumeration for a total of 15 sermons. The subsequent 6 volumes contain Sterne's sermons exclusively.
Provenance: This 7-volume set came from the estate of William Greenly (1720-1791) of Titley Court, Herefordshire, England. A detailed genealogy of this remarkable family line dating back to 1246 can be found below:
