A lightly bumped first Edition/First Printing in otherwise Fine condition housed in a dust-jacket of the same value and wear; Stephen Spender, one of the twentieth century's most lauded and influential poets and essayists, was born in 1916 in England. He spent his early years in India where he was exposed to the rhythms and spirituality of the East. Upon returning to England, he studied at Cambridge and then traveled extensively, living in Spain, Mexico, and France. In 1947, he became a naturalized American and settled in New York City, where he continued to write and teach. In 1984, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.; 8vo; 304 pages .
