About This Item

Macdonald, 1965. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 168 pages, condition is very good. The DJ has ben price clipped. This book is a concise and comprehensive reference to the names and salient particulars of all the principal vessels built for the fleets of the British Commonwealth since the construction of the first ironclad. There are more than two hundred silhouettes illustrating the development of each warship type, class by class, up to the present time. A brief historical survey begins each section, describing, in non-technical terms, the origin and function of each type of warship and the main factors which have influenced its development. There are photographs which contrast ironclads with their successors of today. The information in this book was originally compiled by the author as a collection of notes and drawings for personal reference. chiefly because he was unable to discover a single book containing all this information, and because contemporary publications dealing with the older warships have long been out of print and are only available in a few of the larger reference libraries. The Steel Navy will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in naval matters, whether professionally or otherwise, and also gives a fascinating picture of naval developments for the general reader.
