About This Item

London: Duckworth, 1928. Pp. 292, frontispiece, plus 31 plates, index; tall demy 8vo; blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, the cloth slightly scuffed (and lightly wrinkled on lower board), edges lightly rubbed, top fore-corner of upper board a trifle bruised, spine slightly faded, with tiny nick at foot; book label of David Levine, Sydney, on lower pastedown, the half-title and final index page offset, a few leaves slightly creased, a couple of tiny edge splits and a little light foxing; Duckworth, London, 1928. First edition. *With the armorial bookplate of novelist Anthony Powell on upper pastedown, and an inked inscription to him from Byron on the upper free endpaper: 'Tony, With bitter remorse for his sufferings. Robert. June 7 1928'. Two pencilled annotations (a spelling correction and suggested identification of two unnamed people referred to in the text) are perhaps in Powell's hand. Byron and Powell were friends and contemporaries at Eton and Oxford. In 1928, Powell was working for Duckworth, and if he helped Byron to place this, his second book, with the firm, the 'sufferings' alluded to in the author's inscription could be a reference to that. (Byron's first book, Europe in the Looking-Glass, was published by Routledge).
