Carmer discovered that the people of Alabama offered many interesting stories, especially those from a Sumter County woman named Ruby Pickens Tartt, who related numerous tales she had heard from the rural African American tenant farmers in her home town of Livingston. Stars Fell on Alabama was Carl Carmer’s most famous work, and evolved out his observations of regional social life, especially racial relations, while teaching at the University at Tuscaloosa. Toward the end of his career, Carmer worked as a folklore consultant for Walt Disney Productions and produce a folklore radio series called "Your Neck o' the Woods" and produced four albums of regional songs.
