Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good. Robert Galster (dust jacket illustration). 8vo. Pp. x, [1], 2-159. With a preface by the playwright. Bound in gray half-cloth over gray paper-covered boards, yellow lettering stamped on spine. Crease, now mellowed, on the front free endpaper, light offsetting to front pastedown. In the three-color illustrated dust jacket, price-clipped. First printing of the first edition. In her preface McCullers cites authors as diverse as Fitzgerald, Wolfe, James and Joyce being drawn to writing for the stage.

The dust jacket art by Robert Galster is a restrained depiction of an amorous couple; rear panel photo portrait of the author by Werner H. Kuhn. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
