Alison Uttley grew up in the country, and never lost her pleasure in fields and woods, and the creatures that inhabit them. All her life she wove stories round them, and the tales included in 'From Spring to Spring' were written over a period of forty years. They follow the changes of the year, from the beginning of Spring in 'Mrs Mimble and Mr Bumble Bee',through high summer ('The Cornfield'),harvest ('John Barleycorn'),autumn winds ('The Wind in a Frolic'),and winter snows ('Star-shine'),back to Spring again. The characters range from hedgehogs to humans, from Sam Pig to the Great Bear, but all the stories are filled with an intense enjoyment of the world of nature. They have been chosen by Kathleen Lines, who has also edited two earlier selections of Alison Uttley's stories,'Fairy Tales' and 'Stories for Children',and they are delightfully illustrated by Shirley Hughes. Shirley Hughes (b.1927).Born in Hoylake, near Liverpool, daughter of a department store owner.Educated at West Kirby High School.Studied drawing and costume design at Liverpool School of Art,and drawing and lithography at the Ruskin School of Drawing,Oxford.Since then, working freelance, she has illustrated more than 200 books for British,American and Dutch publishers. As an 'intimate chronicler of familiar childhood experience',she has developed a distinctive, easily recognisable way of drawing children, winning the Kate Greenaway Medal (1977) with 'Dogger'.For black and white work, she uses pen and ink, sometimes with brushed-in areas of solid black; for colour, she works up from a fine sepia brush drawing, adding chalk, watercolour, gouache, and finally black ink. Awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1977 and the eleanor Farjeon Award in 1984.Awarded the OBE in 1999.
