London: Hurst and Blackett, 1866. 1st Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. 8vo (royal). First edition. Original green cloth, pictorially stamped with a moose head and lettered in gilt. B&W in-text engravings and six full page tipped-in water colour plates. One integral errata slip. Sporadic pencil and ink notations. Wear on edges, small tear to head of joint, hinges starting. Roughly trimmed edges. Removed label in top left corner of pastedown. Bookplate of Fairfax of Cameron on front pastedown. Previous catalogue entry pasted to front free endpaper. Light foxing near front. Precise and exact in-text engravings are of moose, caribou, deer, and regional scenery. Plates include wild turkey, prairie hen, Canada and ruffed grouse, white fish, musqualonge, black bass. Interesting topics include: the decrease of carnivores such as black bears; the variety of hares in North America and how to tell them from rabbits; moose compared to elk; caribou compared to reindeer; eagles and hawks, passenger pigeons; the extraordinary quantity of wild fowl; fisheries of Canada, etc. Misspelling of "Mississauga" in endpiece on page 164. Very good condition, a bright, clean copy.
