About This Item
New York: First Edition, 1968. First Edition. First Printing Very near fine in red cloth covered boards with gilt text stamping on the spine with a prior owner's name on the upper edge of the first free end paper and mild foxing to the fore edge of the text block. There is also a very small area on the cloth at the heel of the spine which is slightly sun faded. In a very good+ unclipped dust jacket with a 1/2" closed tear at the lower edge of the front panel and very slight wear at the ends of the spine area. The prior owner's name at the upper edge of the front free end paper is none other than William Shirer (1903 -1993), who was a journalist and one of "Morrow Boys" broadcasting the news of Europe in the early days of World War II. His most famous volumes were Berlin Diary and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. This was McGuane's first book which has become quite uncommon in such nice condition. It is a work of fiction which deals with two men who "resume a long-standing and destructive competitive friendship" while at a hunting and fishing club in Michigan.
