About This Item

From the d.j. flap: "Composed in the mid-1500s in the language of the Aztecs, 'Spirit Child' draws upon Nativity stories from medieval folklore, the Christian Gospels, and traditional Aztec lore. Originally chanted in Mexico City to the accompaniment of drums, it was forgotten in the final collapse of Aztec society. Noted scholar John Bierhorst rediscovered this story and produced the first translation in any modern language. Filled with vivid imagery, it brings to life a stirring message of hope and salvation.

Before illustrating the text, Barbara Cooney traveled to Mexico to do research in the small towns and rural settlements outside Mexico City. The result is one of the finest works of her distinguished career--an inspired series of pictures that impressively captures the splendor and poignancy of this Native American Nativity."

John Bierhorst found the story of Spirit Child among 16th century Aztec texts while doing research for an Aztec-English dictionary.

About Stillman Books

After closing my most recent bookstore in White Rock, B.C., I have decided to sell strictly online for the foreseeable future. My inventory is heavy on
children's and other illustrated books, along with aviation, sea and naval and other categories. I'm still plugging along after 42 years of book-selling.
