London: John Lane, The Bodley Head. Fair with no dust jacket. 1918. Later Printing (1918 edition). Hardcover. In very pale green paper-covered boards (looks almost grey) with illustrated front cover. No Dustjacket. Cover by Charles Ricketts. The spine looks as if it has been re-glued and is missing the top 2.5 inches, showing the webbing. The covers are lightly 'bumped' to the corners, with the bottom front corner rubbed through at the edge. The spine edges and edges to the covers are darkened / discoloured - worse to the spine edge. The page fore-edges and the endpapers / prelims have some light foxing (pale browny spotting) , with the odd light spot in the text here and there - negligible - o/w internally Very Good and after the title page/dedication and Note (by Robert Ross) ALL pages are Very Clean and UNCUT. NO INSCRIPTIONS or other Marks. 46 pp plus two pages of advertisments at the end. Not illustrated inside. Charles Ricketts designed the typography, illustrations and binding for this edition of Oscar Wilde's Aesthetic poem 'The Sphinx' (1894). The binding combines Byzantine and Japanese motifs. As part of the spine is lacking in this copy/edition price is reduced accordingly. A good candidate for rebinding perhaps - with the original covers bound in? . It's an early copy of a book worth saving. Overall this book is better than it sounds. SEE IMAGES. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .
