About This Item

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". None. The complete Speeches of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke, complete in four volumes. In four volumes, complete. With a manuscript timeline of British political events to the rear free-endpaper of Volume I. Edmund Burke, d.1797, was an Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher who, after relocating to England, served for many years in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as a member of the Whig party. He is mainly remembered for his opposition to the French Revolution. It led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig party, which he dubbed the "Old Whigs", in opposition to the pro-French-Revolution "New Whigs" led by Charles James Fox. He is generally viewed as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism. In cloth bindings, with original publisher's boards. Externally smart. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with loss to the cloth of the spine, as shown above. There is a neat ink signature on the front pastedown of volume 1. The front hinges are starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots and handling marks. There are unopened pages throughout the four volumes. Very Good
