The author has attempted to sift the truth from the mass of fiction which has been written about the Inquisition. Basing himself on all the available sources, and making use of much unpublished manuscript material, he has put together an account which relates the activities of the tribunal to the general course of Spanish history. The sufferings of Jews, Moriscos and Protestants are discussed along with the social and cultural impact of the methods of the Inquisition. While his conclusions exculpate the Holy Office from some of the accusations laid against it, he also argues that it played a singularly retrogressive role in the development of Spanish society.
