Map illustrated end pages, showing the Districts Of the Spanish Inquisition. The text is illustrated with colour reproductions of contemporary illustrations. Black coloured cloth covered boards with gilt and red coloured illustration to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Black coloured slip case. The author has attempted to sift the truth from the mass of fiction which has been written about the Inquisition. Basing himself on all the available sources, and making use of much unpublished manuscript material, he has put together an account which relates the activities of the tribunal to the general course of Spanish history. The sufferings of Jews, Moriscos and Protestants are discussed along with the social and cultural impact of the methods of the Inquisition. While his conclusions exculpate the Holy Office from some of the accusations laid against it, he also argues that it played a singularly retrogressive role in the development of Spanish society. Minor rubbing of the book corners and back strip corners. A little bumping to the top slip case corners with rubbing of the edges and panels. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
