About This Item
London: Maxwell, Love & Co, 1937. Lithographed pictorial map of central London, 27 x 35 cm, printed in colours, procession route marked in red, blank verso; folding into slightly dusty buff card covers enclosing a small United States Lines notebook, rust to staples. Published for the Coronation of King George VI, a scroll in the top right of the image could be printed with the name of any sponsor: our present example of the map was issued by the transatlantic shipping company United States Lines. Claude Charles Atkinson (1893-1979) was an advertising and graphic artist. An interview with the Daily Mirror (19 February 1936) described him as ideas man, commercial artist and song and slogan writer whose one ambition is to go on the stage or films. The context was Atkinsons Next-to-Nothing Bungalow at the Ideal Home exhibition, ingeniously but by all accounts attractively furnished (for next to nothing) with recyled rubbish. By 1939 Atkinson was publicity officer to the Potato Marketing Board, transferred to the Minstry of Food in 1940 and to the Ministry of Agriculture postwar. Map
