About This Item
New York: WIlliam Morrow and Company, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/fine. Octavo, 540pp. A crisp, clean copy, gently tapped at the corners; near fine. In a fine dust jacket. A supremely wonderful associatino copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Godwin to her favorite childhood teacher, "Sister Winters." The inscription reads: "August 30, 1987 to Sister Winters, with mych love + admiration, and in hopes she will like "Sister Patrick" who, with her community, has the last word in this story. Gail." Winters is a crucial figure in Godwin's life; while a student at St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines Catholic school in Asheville, NC, Winters persuaded the young Godwin to keep a journal of her thoughts and ideas. In a 2013 interview with Publisher's Weekly, Godwin said about Winters: "I just had to write down everything about her—everything she said, what she taught, what she said to me, and how she smelled...Once, she sent me to her room, and boy did I have a look around; Cashmere Bouquet hand lotion! And this made me want to record." That same Publisher's Weekly profile goes on to discuss Godwin's perusal of one of her old journals form 1969, which inspired her to write, mroe than four decades later, her 2013 novel "Flora." As such, the influence of Sister Winters (who was sometimes styled as "Mother Winters") on Godwin's career as a novelist can hardly be overstated.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
