NY: William Morrow and Company, 1953. First Edition. Signed on the front endpaper: "Wm. T. Polk." Author's first book. William T. (Bill) Polk, born in Warrenton, NC, is the son of Tasker Polk, a poet, prominent attorney, and North Carolina State Senator. An attorney and writer himself, William Polk served as mayor of Warrenton until he left for Greensboro, NC, to become editor of The Greensboro Daily News. He and his wife went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard. His contemporary at both was the author Thomas Wolfe and they enjoyed a long and lasting friendship. 8vo., gray cloth, stamped in yellow & blue, in dust jacket; 261 pages. Very good (bit of scattered light discoloration covers; contents clean & tight with minor browning endpapers); wear (short chips & small tears with clear internal repairs, some rubbing & creasing, tiny chip with larger one head of spine; price-clipped) d/j.
