About This Item
New York, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. Hardcover. Very Good/None. Signed and inscribed on the ffep by the author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, as follows: "To James R. Lawson/Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings". This is a first edition, but it is not the first printing. I know that because on page 184 the big bull alligator was said to be twenty feet. In the first printing of 2945 copies the alligator was said to be thirty feet. In all subsequent printings it was changed to twenty feet. This is an apparent third printing. This is not a book of the month club edition. The second printing was 44,000 copies (BOMC) while the third printing was 10,600 copies. This is the author's first novel which was an instantaneous critical and popular success. This volume has been professionally repaired by reinforcing the inside of the front and back covers and reinforcing the spine at the top and bottom with buckram. Since a trace of foxing was beginning it was professionally sprayed to prevent any further foxing, although it is barely noticeable. This work was done by a European-trained Professional English Hand Bookbinder with more than a half a century of experience. Book itself is now housed in a clear protective brodart jacket. 334 pages. All lettering on front cover and spine is sharp. A historic signatures of the great Pultizer Prize winning author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. A Florida treasure. Available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box!
