About This Item

London: William Rider & Son, 1912. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Phyllis Vere Campbell. A very scarce first edition copy of this work of supernatural fiction. O'Donnell's tale features occult powers and the lost city of Atlantis. A presentation copy, with the stamp to title page. From the library of David and Patricia Cary. With their plates to the front and rear pastedowns. With a presentation stamp to the title page. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and three plates. This novel contains some autobiographical elements, as was common with many of O'Donnell's works. The plight of the three protagonists at the start of 'The Sorcery Club' mirrors O'Donnell's own struggle to escape poverty. His specialism as an author was writing works purporting to be true stories of ghosts and hauntings. 'The Sorcery Club' follows three men who are seduced by the powers of darkness.  In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Former owner's bookplate to the front and rear pastedowns, David and Patricia Cary. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spotting to the fore edge, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good
