About This Item

1697 Sophonisba Nathaniel Lee Restoration English Theatre Hannibal Carthage ROME

'Sophonisba' is a 17th-century play by English playwright Nathaniel Lee. Also known as 'Hannibal's Overthrow' Sophonisba tells the story of the Second Punic War and the defeat of Hannibal and the Carthaginians. 'Sophonisba' is one of many plays by Lee centered around the history of Rome – [Sophonisba was a noblewoman who committed suicide rather than be taken prisoner by the Romans].

This 1697 edition was published in London by Thomas Chapman.
