About This Item
The Hague, [Jan Van Krimpen], 1917, 8vo, pp. 27 (1); sewn in limp brown wrappers. - It was the poet's first book and it also was Van Krimpen's first book production, a true rarity. Published with the intention that the sale of the volume would allow Besnard, who did not own a cent, and who had just finished his military service, to buy a civilian suit. - Quite finely printed on the presses of G.J. Van Amerongen in Amersfoort, with the type 'Hollandsche Mediaeval', designed by S.H. De Roos, [Van Krimpen's first type, the Lutetia, was only drawn and cut 1924-1925]. 75 copies were printed, all on fine English Whatman paper, and not numbered. The typography by Van Krimpen and the in-between title also drawn by him. - Some odd lettering at the two millimetre thin spine of the booklet; overall good condition. - Jan Van Krimpen 1892-1958. Tentoonstelling van zijn Ontwerpen, Letters en Boeken. The Hague, Rijksmuseum Meermanno-Westreenianum, 1967, p. 16. - Pierre H. Dubois: Albert Besnard; article in 'Jaarboek van de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde', 1973, p. 65: "... het eerste boek, allang onvindbaar en onbetaalbaar als het ooit opduikt ...".
