MacCuaig, again draws portraits in verse from French Canadians, here among the lumber camps of Quebec Province. Here are the stories of the "broad-axe men" and of making pine timber square, drawing it by shanty-men over snowy winter roads to high mountain lakes, then floating the timber down streams to the "Grand River" where it was lashed into rafts headed for Quebec. There, timbers were cut to standard lengths and shipped on sailing vessels to Great Britain. many of the verses are characterizations of the men built of these stages of the work.
