About This Item

NY: Doubleday. Page, 1900. First Edition. 8vo, pp. 94. Untrimmed and bound in cream cloth with a color image attached to the cover. Afro-Americana 11038. Work, p. 436. Ms. Weeden, a white Alabama poet and artist, wrote and illustrated this collection of dialect poems. Maria Howard Weened (1847-1905) helped support her war-impoverished family by the sale of her delicate watercolor paintings and her poems, a number of which were set to music. Her favorite subjects were African-Americans.
