About This Item
Boston / New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1921. Collection of cowboy verse/song, some from oral tradition, some from printed sources, some of known authorship, some anonymous. Thorp is credited as the first person to collect the folklore & ballads of the west, which he began while working in New Mexico in 1889, as well as writing his own. The original edition of his collection was published by him in 1908, and found immediate success in the region. This edition adds 77 verses to the 23 in the original book, over 20 of them by Thorp - most later editions reprint only the original 23, though some elaborate on them considerably and add music. Henderson's introduction discusses Thorp's life & work, and the environment in which the poems were written & transmitted. Small hardcover, as pictured. General wear, pages lightly tanned. Text clean; xxiii, blank, 184 pages; index of first lines, glossary. . Second Edition, Enlarged. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Small Duodecimo.
