About This Item

Christian Register Office...S.B. Manning, Printer. Fair with no dust jacket. 1827. First Edition. Paperback. This is a very worn copy with many chips around outside of pages. Covers have been re-stapled. None of the text on pages are affected by the ragged edges of pages. There is the signature "Horatio Alger, Chelsea" on cover AND on title page at top. It is suspected that this is the signature of the father of Horatio Alger, Jr.. Horatio Sr. was a Univeralist preacher and lived in Chelsea (where he also served part-time as the postmaster, farmer, and grammar school teacher) where Jr. was born in 1832. Sr. had financial troubles and in 1844 he moved from Chelsea to Marlborough, Massachusetts for a higher paying position. In 1845 he was installed as pastor of the Second Congregational Society. Horatio Jr. attended Gates Academy and entered Harvard at the age of 16. He went on to become one of the most prolific 19th century American authors. Horatio Jr. followed in his fathers footsteps and became a Unitarian minister in addition to writer. The publication date of this imprint corresponds to Horatio Jr's birth and childhood and the publisher The Christian Register (1821–1957) was the leading American Unitarian weekly, published by the American Unitarian Association further confirming association of both Horatio Sr. and Jr. to the publisher. A nice provenance to the imprint. Booklet now in archival sleeve to protect condition. Rare if not unique imprint. This is NOT a reprint.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 64 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated .
