A finely bound copy of this first Arthur Ransome translation of this Russian folk tale. With the book label of Charles Ballantyne of Yarrow to the front pastedown. An uncommon work. Former owner's pencil inscriptions to the front endpaper 'bound by John P Gray & Son Ltd. Cambridge July 1967'. Former owner's inscription to the recto of rear endpaper in pencil. With the original wraps bound in. Retaining the colophon leaf which explains this work was printed for the Author at the Westminster Pres, London. Ransome is known to have referred to this short story as 'my favourite of all Russian tales'. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots to pages. Fine
