About This Item
Moscow: Detgiz, 1961. Hardcover. Good. Third edition; 8vo; pp. [4], 5-227, [5]; original embossed brick-red boards; elaborate gilt and white decorations; illustrated with engravings; head and tail of spine slightly rubbed; 1" vertical crease line to bottom margin of front cover; hinges cracked; original old East Slavic and contemporary Russian texts on facing pages; good- condition. An epic poem from the late 12th century. It is based on the unsuccessful attack of Kniaz Igor Svyatoslavich, Prince of Novgorod-Seversk, against the Cumans in the southern part of the Don region in 1185. Studies point to it being an anonymous oral composition - put into written form sometime in the 13th century. An interesting fact about the work is that it was first translated into English in 1960 by none other than Lolita's creator Vladimir Nabokov.
