About This Item
Bradbury Press, Scarsdale, NY, 1973, 3rd Printing, 1973. Hardcover. Good/No Dj. Eros Keith. Octavo, hardcover, VG ex library copy with dj in mylar. Endpaper removed. Newbery Medal winner, 176 pp. B&W illustrations, Jessie Bollier was 13 in 1840 when he was kidnapped from his home in New Orleans, and taken aboard a slave ship. He could play the fife, and the captain of the slavers needed a musician to play while the slaves exercised on deck. Trapped on the ship, Jessie found himself part of the nightmare world of slaving--buying men, women and children, chaining and bringing them to a waiting ship, then carrying them to a place where, if they survived, they would be sold like cloth. The Slave Dancer is Jessie's story of his voyage, of four months of his life and near death in the unforgettable company of Purvis, Grime and Stout of the crew, and young Ras of the cargo.
