About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1901. Hardcover. VG- (Ex-lib., marking at bottom of spine, inkstamping inside front cover and on first page, slight damage from pocket removal inside back cover; Corners bumped; Light wear to cloth; Frontispiece has pulled away from binding, but is present). Red cloth over boards; Gilt titling at spine and front cover; 121 pp. plus plates; 8 bw figures; 61 bw plates with tissue overlays. Portfolio volume in matching red cloth, with 66 tissue-guarded plates. Introduction by R.A.M. Stevenson, at that time the Director of the National Gallery, Ireland; Biographical and descriptive catalogue by J.L. Caw, at that time the Curator of TheNational Portrait Gallery of Scotland; Wonderful plates, extensively annotated; Oversized, heavy. Accompanying portfolio has 67 plates mounted on India Paper, of which at least one ispresent in duplicate. Some have written that this edition of 110 copies came with two portfolios of plates, one on India Paper and one on Japon. When I read the statement on the back of the title-page, it clearly states that there were 110 copies of a special edition printed, and that 80 of these had India Paper portfolios and 30 of them had Japon paper portfolios.
