FIRST EDITION (1889), small 4to, 250 x 185 mm, 10 x 7¾ inches, cloth backed cream boards with charming extra coloured illustration by E. Welby (2 young girls with book), (32) pages. Delightful chromolitho frontispiece of girl in long white dress surrounded by birds, 7 further pretty chromos by Edith Berkeley (3), Linnie Watt (2) and Ellen Welby (2), mainly girls, a boy features in only 1 (2 children blackberrying). Numerous black and white illustrations by the same artists and others. 12 original songs with secular subjects: Coming Spring!; Sleep, Baby Dear!; Daisy Dell!; The Conceited Fly; Old Jack Frost; The Wasp at the Picnic!; Sweet Robin Redbreast etc. Covers lightly marked, small stain on faded spine, corners slightly rubbed, endpapers slightly browned, neat old inscription on front endpaper, light foxing to endpapers and half-title, otherwise contents very nice.
