FIRST EDITION, First Printing. Full number line. Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1977. 365 pp. First American Edition. First state with complete number line to one [1]. This is the 1st State of the 1st U.S. printing with the following points intact as required by Hammond and Anderson (A15), notably the misprints on pages 330 and 352 that were corrected in a later impressions. (1) no period after Feanor on p.330, line 4; (2) the word "and" between "Lord of Waters and King of the Sea" is in italics on p.352, line 39.

Title & author printed in silver on the spine. The gilt design on the front cover is repeated at the top and bottom of the spine in gilt.

No Dust jacket. Green cloth boards in very good condition. Some wear on the ends. Bottom of spine is bumped. No evidence of prior ownership. No writing, underlining or highlighting. Pages are clean, not torn and the corners are not bent. Top of pages are red-tipped. No remainder mark. Spine is undamaged. A fold-out, two-colored map is attached and the back and is in very good condition. Nonsmoking.

Synopsis

The Silmarillion narrates the complexity of Middle-earth through a collection of J.R.R Tolkein’s 5 mythopoeic works, illustrating an extensive history and lore in relation to his work, T he Hobbit . The collection was originally published as individual works, but was later rejected due to incompleteness. In 1977  The Silmarillion was edited and published posthumously by Tolkien's son Christopher, with assistance from Guy Gavriel Kay, who later became a noted fantasy writer.
