New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., [1938]. Tall 8vo. viii, 328 pp. Photo frntsp., 30 photo plates1 large folding map. Light-blue ribbed-silk cloth, red lettrng (minor shelfwear, rubbing, removed bookplate on ffep., small stamping marks), w/ d.j. photo cover art (minor chipping & tears head of spine, creasing, edgewear, minor scuffing, closed tears), still VG/G- copy from library of Prof. Kenneth Erickson, w/ bookplate on front pastedown. First American edition of this exceptional memoir tracing the Swedish explorer’s Motor Car Expedition 1933-1935 mapping out possible highway routes to Sianking across Western China and Mongolia to Turkestan for the Chinese government. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the confiscation of Manchuria by the Imperial Japanese, Hedin had stepped forward to urge the Chinese that they could better protect their remaining lands, by establishing a new “Silk Road” which would open 3 years later by 1938. Exceedingly scarce in original jacket.
