Description:
Goupil, Paris, 1880; Woodburytype photograph by Ferdinand Mulnier of eminent sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), renowned for his design, in 1878, of the Statue of Liberty. An equally accomplished painter, Bartholdi nevertheless chose to work under the pseudonym "Amilcar Hasenfratz" when creating his popular paintings of Egyptian themes, fearing they might detract from his fame as a sculptor. Photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5", mounted on the first of twelve 11" x 14" leaves of biographical and critical text by Charles Lefevbre. Additionally laid in is a large 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo, mounted on 11" x 14" card, of the Bartholdi sculpture "Rouget de Lisle." All text in French. From the 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of leading figures from the arts and sciences, published in Paris by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Description:
Hollywood, California, 1923; Antique 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" b&w silver gelatin photograph of Mary Pickford as "Rosita" in the 1923 silent film of the same name directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Long tired of being type-cast as a child, even in maturity, "Rosita" was Pickford’s personal project, designed as a breakout vehicle for her first appearance in an adult role. Multitalented Knute Olaf Rahmn (1876-1957) served in early Hollywood as actor, cinematographer, and photographer, with over forty films to his credit. It was while working at Kalem Studios in Glendale, California that he first collaborated with Mary Pickford, and subsequently became her preferred still photographer, shooting her publicity stills and documenting much of her career and personal life. A beautiful photograph of perhaps the most important film actress of all time, whose prodigious talent and business acumen were pivotal in the formation of the new order in Hollywood which created the star system and the… Read More

Description:
, . 8" x 10" glossy silver gelatin photograph of dancer/actress Eleanor Powell, whose pyrotechnic footwork earned her the moniker "Queen Of Tap." As a child Powell was forced by her mother to enroll in dance classes as a means of overcoming her shyness, and much to her own surprise excelled to such an extent that by age twelve she was opening dinner shows in Atlantic City and performing at private social events, where she met Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who became her mentor. Between 1935 and 1945 Powell famously partnered with Fred Astaire, Buddy Ebsen, and George Murphy in such movies as Born To Dance, Rosalie, Broadway Melody of 1936, Honolulu, Broadway Melody of 1938, and Broadway Melody of 1940, which featured the legendary dance routine Begin The Beguine, widely considered the greatest tap number in film history. When once asked about Powell, Fred Astaire commented, "She put ‘em down like a man, no ricky-ticky sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More
