(ASTRONAUTS – MERCURY PROGRAM). The Mercury Seven astronauts were the first Americans in space in the early 1960s. DS. 1 pg. 4” x 5”. N.d. N.p. A page signed “Leroy G. Cooper Jr”, “Walter M. Schirra Jr”, “Alan B Shepard Jr”, “Donald K. Slayton”, “John H. Glenn Jr.”, and “M. Scott Carpenter”. Gordon Cooper, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, and Scott Carpenter were six of the seven men selected as the original seven astronauts by NASA, the Mercury Seven. Only Gus Grissom did not sign this document. These seven men flew on all of the NASA human spaceflight programs of the 20th century – Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle. They will always be remembered for creating a new profession in the United States, contributing towards the landing on the Moon in 1969, and establishing the image of the American astronaut for decades to come that most still hold today. It is in fine condition.
