About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1956. Trade Paperback. Very Good/Good. 6" x 9. 433 pages indexed. 57 black and white photographs and reproductions. Appendix, notes, bibliography. Date in ink on front endpaper. No other marks or stamps. Clean and tight. Blue gilt-lettered cloth with chipped and price clipped dust jacket. A one inch piece is missing from the top of the front of dust jacket and behind this hole the blue board is faded. The story of Daniel Edgar Sickles, congressman turned Civil War major general. Based on solid research and written with wit and gusto, this book is a fine biography of the complex and enigmatic glory-seeking General Dan Sickles. Civil War hero-Congressman tried for the murder of his young wife's lover. Close friend of five Presidents, spendthrift and livertine. Explosive diplomat. The gaudiest American of his day. A problem child for all of his 94 years. A Tammany politician so involved with women that he worried even Tammany. A diplomat who insulted Queen Victoria. Often wrong, often right but never dull.
