About This Item

London: John Murray, 1882 London: John Murray, 1882 304 pp with folding map bound in after text, and B&W illustrations in text. Text is clean, tight and unmarked with considerable foxing to the first and last few pages. Page edges are marbled. Contemporary quarter-bound green leatherette library binding, the library in question being The Library of Parliament, New South Wales, Australia. No other library markings. Henry Seebohm (1832-1895) lived in Sheffield, northern England, where he owned a steel manufacturing business. He used his wealth to undertake ornithological collecting trips, including two to Siberia: one to the Petchora River in 1875, the other in 1877 to the Yensei River. He first published two books, "Siberia in Russia" and "Siberia in Asia"detailing his collecting and his special interest in the patterns of bird migration across Eurasia. They were later combined into one volume as "Birds of Siberia" which covers his expedition to the valley of Yenisei, in Asiatic Siberia. It included "two shipwrecks, which were not part of the original programme," and he wintered too far north to encounter the main stream of migrating birds. But he was able to define the geographical limits of many European, Central Asian, and Chinese species, and recorded, among other observations in his second book, "Siberia in Asia," that Siberia "is a second Canada in reserve, waiting for a European overflow." . 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Good.
