About This Item
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1885. First Edition. Small 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth, decorated all over in blind, the upper cover and spine gilt lettered. 260 pp. A very good, bright and fresh copy of this little gem, the cloth still bright and blue with only very minimal wear along the edges and tips, internally very clean and completely free of foxing or spotting, the hinges firm and tight, all near fine. AN UNCOMMONLY FRESH COPY OF THIS FIRST EDITION from one of the earliest American writers to emerge from the state of California. His stories, often infused with local colour from the region, won him world regard. BY SHORE AND SEDGE has been described as an “awfully tall tale, awfully well told.”
