Bright, crisp, clean, glossy, photograph of Asian Indian, colour artwork illustration (Painting of 'Lady with Bird') design, orange +black lettering to front panel of dw/dj.Black background with an orange panel with b/w lettering within and a b/w illustration of the Crime Club logo at foot of same, rear panel with white background and black lettered text of critics' reviews(2); with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners – some minor nicks, minimal chipping and rubbing to corners' tips, similar to both head+foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj. Top+fore-edges whilst aged/toned are clean without foxing/spotting or other marks; contents bright, tight, clean with page-edge toning, solid and sound – no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners – possibly unread apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, original plain red cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettering to spine/backstrip and clean plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,8-211pp [paginated] includes 18 chapters; plus [unpaginated] 2pp blankhalf-title with story precis with author other titles listed to its reverse, title page, author's note with blank verso, and to the rear,a further 2pp blanks.
Visually the overall exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is in anacceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the mainly exterior faults, described that prevent a higher grading for the dw/dj.Despite them,it is still an acceptable copy for collectors.
Inspector Ghote (pronounced Go-tay) is in worse trounble than ever before.Given a task at first seems merely embarrassing,to escort an aging British film hero on a tour of bombay's notorious red-light area, the 'Cages',he is before long confronted with murder.
Yet worse than this. The sole suspect is none other than the Sheriff of bombay, repected holder of the honorary legal office,an ex-Rajah and former Captain of India's cricket team. And he is suspect only because Ghote has had one swift glimpse of his face - as he hurriedly left a house of ill-fame. What should our hero do? If he wants proof, what will he have to do? What humiliations will he have to suffer? What sights will he see? What variety of Bombay's citizens will he encounter in all their rich differences? And what will his wife think of it all?
H. R. F. Keating tells us with that inimitable blend of 'wit, gentleness and expert stroytelling' (Times of India) which has already won a worldwide readership for what must surely be the world's best-loved policeman.
