Signed by Ted Shawn on half-title page and signed on rear fep by ensemble dancer Dennis Landers and pianist Jess Meeker. Boards in silver moire cloth, stamped in blue. Luell Weed's bookplate on front paste-down, else clean. Dust jacket has some damp staining along top edges of panels; chipped at spine ends; in a clear archival sleeve. 32 photographs by Ralph Hawkins and 70 reproductions of photographs of ballets, ensembles, etc. Color frontispiece with tissue guard showing the painting ''Abstract Psychological Portrait of Shawn'' by Katherine Dreier. 81 pages. 12.25 x 9.25 inches. Pictorial profile of the influential pioneer of early American modern dance, Ted Shawn (1891-1972). Includes a biographical sketch by Katherine S. Dreier, introductory essay by Professor Hans Hildebrandt, and foreword by Dr. H. Niedecken-Gebhard. Four page List of Original Ballets (ensembles, trios, duets, and solos) chronologically arranged, 1911-1931. The appendix provides conceptual descriptions of fourteen pieces (e.g. O Brother Sun and Sister Moon, Four Dances Based on American Folk Music, Ramadan Dance, etc.). Tipped in at the front is a two-sided program for the Shawn ensemble performance held Oct. 25, 1933 at the Goddard School for Girls in Barre, Vermont; at the rear, also tipped, are a one-sided program from Oct. 23, 1933 for the performance at the Strong Theater [Burlington, Vermont] and a large newspaper clipping, ''Berkshire Mountain Farm a Studio of Dancers' Art,'' [Jacob's Pillow] from the Boston Sunday Globe, Oct. 22, 1933. Bookplate of Luell A. Weed [m. Guthrie], the head of Stanford University's Department of Women's Physical Education between 1959-1968, who joined the Stanford faculty in 1936.
