About This Item

New York: Gnome Press, 1953. First edition (stated). About fine in about-fine dust jacket.. First printing of this collection of Moore's early stories, starring the iron-souled Jirel of Joiry and the roguish wanderer Northwest Smith. The second collection of Catherine Lucille Moore's short work issued by Gnome Press, following 1952's JUDGMENT NIGHT, SHAMBLEAU AND OTHERS alternately features Jirel of Joiry, "a brave woman and a savage warrior, and the most reckless soldier of all her men-at-arms"; and reckless, grinning space adventurer Northwest Smith. The latter was first introduced in the title story, Moore's first professional sale (to WEIRD TALES, in 1933) and still her most famous single work. "Shambleau," a tale of mercy rewarded, carried a punch in a genre then more accustomed to sublimating and symbolizing the erotic horrible than to naming it out loud; it remains influential on much later work that sought the same borderland space between science fiction, mythic fantasy, and nameless horror. 8'' x 5.25''. Original teal cloth. In original unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket, designed by Ric Binkley. 224 pages. Only trace wear to edges of both jacket and book.

Reviews

On Nov 22 2011, LexEDReader said:
This book was one of the earliest hardback collections of science fiction from a woman who was a master of pulp fiction from the 1920's and later. Catherine Moore developed one of the earliest archetypes of the surly antihero of the spaceways-- his name was Northwest Smith, and we see his like today in the name of Han Solo. Moore also created another character, Jirel of Joiry, a woman sword fighter in a vaguely renaissance french landscape who travels into the underworld in search of vengenace. Both characters are represented in multiple stories from this venerable old collection from the 1950's classic publisher Gnome Press.
