Good complete working copy of this uncommon first edition. Harte's work, Ian Campbell Ross suggests [in The Shandean v.20, November 2009, p.9 et seq] was the source of several Shandean elements - from his early reflections on the difficulty of writing his book and his use of digression through to his reference to the Abbess of Quedlingberg - and though debate continues as to the precise influence Harte's work may have had, the…

London: London: Printed by William Jaggard, 1607. 1st Edition . Half leather. Very Good. First edition; folio; [38], 743 [of 757], [12]pp. In recent dark brown half-calf over blue marbled boards with five raised spine bands, gilt-lettered morocco spine label to second compartment, gilt-lettered date direct to foot of spine, all page edges stained blue. Tiitle partly hand-coloured and with early names & pen trials, somewhat soiled, laid down and re-inforced with archival tissue at inner and outer margin (well clear of text). Lacks initial and final blanks, also A6, B1, C3-4, K3-4 and T3-4 (i.e. 8 printed leaves missing). Marginal tears and repairs to several leaves, not affecting text except for leaves B2-6, K2, V1, 2I3-4 and 2L6 with relatively minor loss; closed tear to D6, unobtrusive browning and occasional stains, with sporadic early ink annotations and early engraved ownership label on front pastedown, otherwise clean and complete. Issue with woodcut gorgon on title. Sound copy of the profusely illustrated first edition of Topsell's iconic account of four-footed animals, directly providing as it does a fascinating Tudor perspective of natural history, and printed by William Jaggard, celebrated early printer of Shakespeare. Increasingly uncommon. Nissen ZBI 4145; STC 24123; Wellcome 6323; ESTC S122276.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
