About This Item
Btistol: Houghton Mifflin Company Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1968, 260pp. Very light wear, else VG+ in VG dj. The descendants of the Fowler family, prominent in other historical novels by the author, are the central figures in this story of Broke Neck, Kentucky in Appalachia, settled in Revolutionary War times. Sudley Fowler, an important figure in the community is leery of any outsider, as are most of the folks in the community, but he is the most outspoken. He is particularly suspicious of the new preacher who wants to change things. But since things have been running pretty much the same for the past two hundred years, it will be a formidable task. The preacher is not the only outsider; others in the form of federal revenue officials enter the picture. But the citizens of Broke Neck are not about to surrender their rural ways without a struggle. They are very much attached to their land, their music, and their way of life..
