About This Item

London: Rupert Hart-Davis and the Book Society, 1953. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first book club edition of this fascinating work concerning the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's experiences in Tibet. The first book club edition of this work, published in the same year as the true first edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006) was an Austrian mountaineer and Nazi SS sergeant. This work is an autobiographical travel book, based on his experiences in Tibet, during a fascinating period of history between 1944 and 1951. It covers his escape from a British internment camp during the Second World War, and the interim period before the Communist Chinese People's Liberation Army began the 1950 Battle of Chamdo, when the Chinese attempted to reestablish control over Tibet. Illustrated throughout. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean apart from spotting to the fore edge and to the first and last couple of pages. Dust wrapper is bright but spotted to the spine and chipped to the upper extremities, with a closed tear to the rear of the wrap. Very Good
