The true facts, at last, about history's barest family First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper verso, "For Noel, Who can sue but he damn well can't collect - Dr. Seuss". This title is one of the author's few books written for adults, and is, unusually for Seuss, written in prose. Quarto. Original pale pink cloth, spine and front board lettered and blocked in red, pictorial endpapers. Illustrations throughout by the author. Slight lean to spine, extremities toned, offsetting to endpapers, a couple of spots to preliminary leaves, a very good copy indeed, in the unclipped jacket, spine and flap folds toned, extremities nicked, short closed tear to foot of front flap fold, a very good example. Younger & Hirsch 71.
Synopsis
The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History's Barest Family is a picture book of the tale of Lady Godiva, written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss. One of Seuss's few books written for adults, its original 1939 publication by Random House was a failure and was eventually remaindered. However, it later gained popularity as Seuss himself grew in fame, and was republished in 1987.
