First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 255pp. Publisher's original oatmeal cloth, lettered in blue at the spine and with the blue top edge stain, resulting in just a fraction of bleeding to the upper margin of a single text leaf. The binding just a fraction cocked and with some fairly light fox spotting throughout. Former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Very good in lightly rubbed, marked and chipped yet still very crisp price-clipped dust wrapper. The author's sixth novel, detailing the early months of the Second World War, written in July 1941 following Waugh's return home after the evacuation of Crete, and with a printed dedication to Randolph Churchill who was instrumental in Waugh's wartime commission. Very good+ (one spot of edgewear at bottom of spine, slight imperfections to two letters in title on front cover, see scans; cover is red, including the scan of back and spine which looks orange, but that is a trick of light; it's red!). Alice, the central character, is a social activist, squatter, demonstrator, yet looking for domesticity in the midst of disturbing unrest. 370 pages. Dust jacket front and back panels feature b/w Harlem street scenes by photographer Leroy McLucas, with title and author's name in red script on front panel. Very slight rubbing at tips and spine ends. Text block tight and square, pages clean and unmarked. Dust jacket mildly sunned with spine faded; some chipping at spine ends, as well as at top leading corners top, front and back; slight edge creasing; three quarter inch closed tear on front panel near head of spine, as well as half inch closed tear at top leading corner.
