Jackson's Brutal Executions

[Philadelphia?], 1828. Seven broadside handbills, each printed within a coffin border surrounded by dark mourning background illustrated with death's head and several angels. Seven leaves printed on four octavo sheets. Disbound, light spotting and minor wear. Good+. These handbills were printed in various formats-- individually, and in pamphlet form. Our research indicates that we offer an incomplete copy of one of the pamphlet productions, and price it accordingly.

During the Creek War of 1815 Jackson ordered the execution of six soldiers for mutiny. The alleged "mutiny" was nothing of the sort: it was in fact a good-faith misunderstanding over the length of their volunteer enlistment terms. Jackson went ahead with the executions despite contrary recommendations. We offer five of the six mourning broadsides: Edward Lindsey, Henry Lewis, David Morrow, John Harris and David Hunt. The sixth broadside, memorializing Jacob Webb, is not present.
In addition, we offer in identical format the mourning broadside commemorating John Woods, also arbitrarily executed at Fort Strother, but for similarly trivial reasons; and one "to the memory of the Mother of John Woods. She permitted her Son, a youth of tender age, to join the Militia at Fort Strother, In the Creek nation, where he discharged his Duty faithfully, until he was Shot to Death" on Jackson's orders.
