About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc., 1943. 8vo. x, 118 pp. Numerous photo plates. Three-quarter burgundy-coloured morocco, raised bands, gilt lettering, by the Barrett Bindery in Chicago, IL (slight rubbing to joints, edgewear, very slight chipping head of spine), still VG copy from library of E.H. Ted Wolfe, president of the Barrett Bindery, and former secretary of the Adventurer’s Club, with bookplate on ffep., pastedown images of the Ernest Hamlin Baker Time Magazine cover portrait of Rickenbacker, signed TLS from Rickenbacker to Ted Wolfe, inscribed on ffep. by Rickenbacker to Ted Wolfe, several newspaper & magazine clippings tipped-in (some offset toning to pages), and long manuscript reminiscence by Ted Wolfe of Rickenbacker’s fighter plane tactics during World War I. First edition, signed & extra-illustrated, of this harrowing account of survival during World War II in the South Pacific. In the TLS dated Sept. 17, 1964 from Rickenbacker to Ted Wolfe on Rickenbacker’s Rockefeller Plaza letterhead, the flier thanks him for the invitation to speak before the Chicago-based Adventurer’s Club, but “unfortunately, I am unable to accept as I am on the road day and night all over the country in behalf of Senator Barry Goldwater,” and also inscribed this copy to Ted Wolfe. In the page of manuscript on the verso of the Table of Contents page, Wolfe notes that one of his mountain climber friends Jack Horton of the US Forest service was not a fan of Rickenbacker’s because “It seems that in World War I, Eddie conceived the idea that he should shoot down German planes before they could do more damage -- so -- he would hang up in the clouds, dive out and shoot down his 22 German planes and for balloons -- most unsporting!”
